October 18 Newsletter

Mrs. Bali’s Firsts Grade News

Review of our week:
In math we are really working on doubles, doubles plus one and adding to a ten.  I have been seeing a lot of progress in reading.  I am very happy about that.  We are almost  finished with our unit on Fairy tales from other lands.  We have a student from SUU coming and do a dance integration with this unit. We also got to go and watch fifth grade let their volcanoes off.

Carving Pumpkins:
I only have 3 dads coming to carve pumpkins.  I would really like to have 3 more if I can.  It will be on Thursday, October 31 @ 10:30.  If you can come and help, please let me know.  Thanks!!

Reading:
At this point I want your child to be doing the reading for all of, or most of the time, instead of having somebody read to them.  It is great if you are reading to them on top of their 20 minutes and I would like you to continue with that, but they really need to be doing their 20 minutes of reading themselves.  Reading to them will help make them better readers also.
When your child is reading to you please listen to the way they are reading.  We are really working on fluency and expression especially if your child is on a level F or higher.  We talk about how when you are reading it should sound like you are talking and not like a robot.  Please listen to your child and help them work on these things.  This is one of the reasons they should be reading their take home books at least 2 or 3 times. If your child is reading on a g or higher, they only need to read it 1-2 times.  I would also like them to be reading the sight word lists. If you would like some more books for your child to read at home, please let me know.

Mrs. Bali’s First Grade News

Review of our week:
I just wanted to thank everybody for coming to SEP’s.  In math we are working on addition strategies.  We wrote about what we are going to be for Halloween.

Math Groups:
In First grade we will be doing some math groups.  We gave a common assessment with writing numbers correctly up to 50.  We then divided them into groups. Two teachers are working with the students who could use a little more help with writing the numbers and seeing the pattern, one teacher is working with the kids who need help to making the numbers the correct way (if they are writing numbers backwards) and the other teacher will be working with the students who were able to write to 50 and did have any reversals with their numbers.  They will work on numbers up to 120.
As First Grade teachers we went through the core and decided and what was the most important math and reading concepts we wanted them to know by the end of the year.  In our math groups we are working on these skills.

Field Trip:
We are going to go on a field trip to the Robinson Family Pumpkin patch here in Cedar City on Wednesday, October 23, when we come back from the fall break.  I sent home a permission slip on Friday.  If you would please send the permission slip and $1 to pay for the pumpkin by Friday, October 18 that would be great. We love to have parents come with us on field trips.  We don’t have enough room on the bus, but you are more than welcome to meet us at the pumpkin patch.  We will leave about 9:00 and be back by 10:15.  Thanks

Carving Pumpkins:
I like to have some dads come in on Halloween and carve pumpkins with our class.  I put the kids in groups and they get to decide on the face and clean the pumpkin out.  The dads get to do the carving and take the pumpkin home as a thank you.
I am looking for 5-6 dads to come in and carve pumpkins.  We will do it Thursday, October 31 at 10:30.  If you are interested and can come and help please let me know, so I know how many pumpkins to get.  Thanks
